I feel it's rude and inconsiderate to even go into a business, if you are using an ear bud or cell phone. Either wait, or make the call after you leave the store. Yes, there are times when it's important to respond (if already in the store). Yes, salespeople are there for your convenience - to help you - rude people make it difficult to exhibit a 'happy face', so to speak. Believe me, there are those who are rude about being on their cell phones while looking and yet when they are ready to check out, they expect individual, special treatment. How about treating others they way you want to be treated? You get more with honey than you do with salt. Treat your salesperson with the same dignity and respect you ... expect, from them!
This what shopping and holidays do for me: total frustration. "Merry Christmas" is such a misnomer when people are so greedy and selfish that they cannot smile, be considerate, kind, or polite. Being in retail I am seeing customers who "put me off" if they come into our store to shop using their phone, etc. - i.e. hand gesture, a "ssshh" to me, or just simply ignore me when I am attempting to greet, and help them. The other day that happened and I just simply walked away from the woman, and waited for her to "hail" me down (kind of like a cab) when she needed me.

"Sometimes sharing about my worst mistakes is the best medicine for someone else!" ~nrl I sure am going to miss Sam Champion, the champion of weather for so many years on GMA! Good luck on your new venture; I guess I'll have to become a weather geek now, and peek in on the weather station and see what you're up to now.
