I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy. I am writing you today because I have a dear friend who is disabled and I am holding a benefit on his behalf; his name is Don Earhart, of Lexington.
Several years ago, Don’s doctors discovered that he had been living with a broken neck and didn't know. He had surgery and the break was corrected, however, now walks with a cane and it is difficult for him to get around. He is a fighter, and that doesn't stop him. He has never been afraid of work and has worked hard his entire life, in spite of his physical disabilities.
Don has always helped others in need ... whenever and however he could. A truly gifted mechanic, he's always given the unfortunate a break in cost of his services so they could get back on the road, to their own life. Cars are his passion, along with fishing. Don lives in Lexington and has, most of his life. He loves his children and grandchildren and is a fun grandpa. His oldest granddaughter, Haley, says he is the best cook in the world!! (Darn it! Why can't I be?)
A few months ago the small trailer house he lived in caught fire; it destroyed nearly everything. Family members found him a very nice temporary camper to live in until he can find another small, used trailer home. Just a week ago Don was informed by the City of Lexington he can no longer live in that home because it is a temporary camper, and must be moved every 30 days. The owners of the trailer court supported him in his fight but, unfortunately, they lost the battle. The City of Lexington and Dawson County Court has determined he has until February to find other living arrangements.
As anyone in the same position would be, Don is concerned; he worries about what he is going to do now. He is a proud man, not one to ask for help. My mission, as his friend and mother of our children, is to try to help him. I have also asked my friends, family and musician family for help. I am organizing a fund raiser and am in need of volunteers to cater food, collect funds, set up tear down, and other various tasks necessary to run a successful benefit.
This fund raiser is scheduled for January 20th, 2013 from 1 to 7 pm at the Eagles Club, 113 W. 5th St., Lexington NE 68850 (308-324-7995).
Although there are thousands of homeless people out there in our country, I would like to begin in my own back yard. If you are interested in helping, please contact me.
