Needless to say, I was just a bit aggravated. I asked why it wasn't made "public", and told her I had not seen anything about this. Granted I don't take the local newspaper, but do try to keep track of what's going on in the world. Her response to me was something like that was how the post office does it, just sneaks it in on us ... GIMME A BREAK! First of all, not the right response at all not to mention we have to know weight, size, dimensions, thicknesses, etc. of what we mail. Postage just went up not that long ago and they assured us, then, nothing would be changing in the near future. We are losing our small-town post offices, so they're cutting their staff, we're losing services, and now this! And I heard yesterday they won't be able to pay the government, oh goodie!!! Yes, the internet and email has put a crunch on the postal service, but why should we lay people have to get the brunt of all this? How about quitting using million dollar equipment that isn't all that efficient anyway, and GIVE PEOPLE JOBS!!! grrrr ... and life goes on ...
With my company check in hand (already made out), and ready to purchase one roll of $.44 stamps and one roll of $.17 stamps, I was caught a bit off guard. When I told her I wanted a roll of .17 stamps, she politely informed me that those are now TWENTY cents ... 20 cents, for the "extra ounce" factor on heavier envelopes.

And incredibly bloated pension system is the real culprit here. Get that under some sort of control and the USPS would be on its way back to solvency. Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind eliminating Saturday mail as well. Most of it is junk mail for me anyhow.

Thanks, David! Now we're cookin' ... thanks for the post! I know nothing about the "pension system" of the U.S. Post Office. But, don't you agree that email and the internet has put the crunch on our "snail mail"? Being a graphic designer, proofreader, writer, by trade, I enjoy junk mail (I like to pick it apart, design work, grammatics, and spelling errors). As for Saturday mail, I'm a fence sitter on that one, sometimes mail is my main companion (sad, huh?) ... just teasing, hehe ...

Here Here Here !!!! I think its horrible what they are charging for stamps these days... IF they would STOP ALL the junk mail, it would make ALL their jobs a lot easier and save a lot of money in the long run. And I hadn't heard anything about the cost of stamps going up either... Good luck next time Nancy !!

Yes, Jimmie, we are such a spoiled lot, and wasteful nation, aren't we? I feel there are many changes that could be made, for efficiency and cost. The .17 to .20 cent stamp is for the cost of an extra ounce, on normal envelope mailings. The woman at the post office told me they didn't publicize - probably didn't want to hear the flak about it, before the change. I, of course, expressed mine! *smile*
