Since I am "officially" 64 ... for those who have known me a long time ... or those who "think" they know me well ... I want to ask you ...

I thought sure I would have fun with this, and no one seems to want to play, haha.  I decided to post this in the blog (where some of my regulars do respond), since no one responded on the home page. Or maybe, just maybe, nobody loves me anymore ... aw, c'mon guys, "Pobody's Nerfect"!

Vanity ... is so "vain" ...

From what I've been reading about the words "vanity" and "pride", I'm not so sure I want to "pride" myself in being "vain".  It "appears" to be all about "self" and "ego" - all about "ME".  If you're "vain" enough, "proud" enough, or "egotistic" enough - then why do you need to "prove yourself" to anyone else, if all you care about is "YOU"?  The most vain people I know are quite insecure in themselves and seem to need "accolades" and constant "attention" from others, to boast that false ego they exhibit to the public.  To quote a line from a song, "It Ain't Pretty" ... ~nr lenz

In conventional parlance, vanity is the excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness to others. Prior to the 14th century it did not have such narcissistic undertones, and merely meant futility.[1] The related term vainglory is now often seen as an archaic synonym for vanity, but originally meant boasting in vain, i.e. unjustified boasting;[2] although glory is now seen as having an exclusively positive meaning, the Latin term gloria (from which it derives) roughly means boasting, and was often used as a negative criticism.[3]  ~from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity

vain·glo·ry play_w2("V0007400")  (vnglôr, -glr, vn-glôr, -glr) n. pl. vain·glo·ries 1. Boastful, unwarranted pride in one's accomplishments or qualities. 2. Vain, ostentatious display.

pride -  noun, verb, prid·ed, prid·ing. noun 1. a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc. 2. the state or feeling of being proud. 3. a becoming or dignified sense of what is due to oneself or one's position or character; self-respect; self-esteem. 4. pleasure or satisfaction taken in something done by or belonging to oneself or believed to reflect credit upon oneself: civic pride. 5. something that causes a person or persons to be proud: His art collection was the pride of the family.

From Winter Whimsey to Holiday Warmth

11/27/2011

I decided I needed to mix things up, with winter and holidays so quickly upon us.  My quest was to find my box of curtains and put up warmer, darker colors to help insulate the house on the north.  With the old shade tree now gone from our severe spring storms 2010, that north wind is more penetrating.  I've found a lot of things in my search today, not one being a curtain.  I had forgotten that I put those "extras" in a give-away box last year.  Tsk, tsk ... so instead, I moved a few sets from room to room, went junk shopping and found something I hope will work.
I guess this search is a good thing ... the Christmas boxes are now down from the shelves, holiday music on the turntable (okay, CD player); the boxes are stacked and ready to be gone through to see what holiday whimsey will make it on the walls as well as widgets 'n things hangin' around to help the holiday ambience to envelope within.
I miss my gal pals this time of year - those who used to come to my house for "egg nogg" to ring in winter and the holiday season.  You gals, you know who you are ...  We would meet some time after Thanksgiving, or around our first winter snow.  Yummy, miss you gals!  *smile* ... heart-to-heart hugs ...  Here's to us, the egg nog (which, by the way, most of them did not like initially), here's to the music, here's to our gal pal fun!  Thanks for the memories ...  where is that darn blender anyway?!

TONGUE IN CHEEK - Back to Reality

11/25/2011

DEFINITION:
tongue in cheek:  meant in an ironic manner; not meant to be taken seriously; insincere
ORIGIN:
This phrase clearly alludes to the facial expression created by putting one's tongue in one's cheek. This induces a wink (go on - try it), which has long been an indication that what is being said is to be taken with a pinch of salt. It may have been used to suppress laughter. 'tongue in cheek' is the antithesis of the later phrase - 'with a straight face'.
SYNONYMS:
amusing, blithe, clever, comic, comical, dry, facetious, farciacal, flip*, flippant, in fun, in jest, ironic, irreverent, jesting, jocular, joking,  joshing, kiddingly, laughable, not serious, playful, pulling one's leg, putting one on, sarcastic, satirical,  wisecracking

Often people who proclaim to have had an 'ephiphany', 'ah ha', or 'I get it' moment,  are either uttered as 'tongue in cheek' or they are simply 'in denial' - especially when you see no change in the person who has made such a brazen  proclamation.  How can a person have realizations and not have some kind of change, in the  heart?

Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching? ~Dennis and Wendy Mannering

Today I'm posting quotes about being thankful, grateful, kind, courteous and appreciative - to each other, and to ourselves.  The irony of these quotes is that during a time of year when all those things I mention are not what I see or hear, but rather people who are full with greed, selfishness, and unkind actions.  Too many people do miss life's "silver lining" because they are "expecting gold"!  It's now the "gimme pig" time of year! ... gimme this, gimme that mentality ... and "what's in it, for me" ...

"Physical strength is measured by what we can carry; spiritual by what we can bear."  ~Author Unknown

"Every day may not be good, but there's something good in every day."  ~Author Unknown

"Courtesies of a small and trivial character are the ones which strike deepest in the grateful and appreciating heart."  ~Henry Clay

"You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late."  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold. "  ~Maurice Setter

"No one is useless in this world  who lightens the burden of another."  ~Charles Dickens

"None of those material possessions do anything to make your life any better ... I know a lot of people who have a lot of everything, and they're absolutely the most miserable people in the world.   So it won't do anything for you unless you're a happy person and can have peace with yourself."  ~Lenny Kravitz

"When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around."  ~Willie Nelson

"Blessed are those that can give without remembering and receive without forgetting."  ~Author Unknown

"To the generous mind the heaviest debt is that of gratitude, when it is not in our power to repay it."  ~Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

"There is a calmness to a life lived in gratitude, a quiet joy."  ~Ralph H. Blum

"Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don’t unravel."  ~Unknown

Suzy Homemaker has escaped, ha!

11/20/2011

Yep, I'm certain Suzy Homemaker escaped today ... I so seldom bake I thought for certain my neighbor must be baking, then realized it's MY kitchen that has this "aroma" of baked goods!  I needed to use my black bananas so I found a recipe that sounded good, made some changes in the original recipe, and hoped it would be, at least, edible.  It' a good thing I checked it early, it would have burned.  It's more like a heavy bread, than banana bread ... very, very moist because of the applesauce, a tasty morsel indeed.
I am more comfortable changing a basic recipe with soups, stews, or one-dish meals, not so much with "baking" -  not nearly so comfortable.
Realizing I don't have "loaf" pans, I had to use a glass casserole dish, let them cool, cut and store them, so I can  wash the dang casserole dish and use it again.  What's next?  I have some zucchini that needs used and a friend has shared a recipe for a "Zucchini Casserole".  I'm on board with that since I'm not a huge fan of zucchini, nor do I know what to do with it.  So, that's my next culinary concoction to attempt today.
In spite of overbaking just a tad, the  Zucchini Casserole was yummy.  And, yes, I would make it again.  I haven't baked in such a long time, and my kitchen is small and inefficient so I am forced to clean up after myself - during and in between individual dishes.  Those two dishes took a few more hours than I anticipated.  No time for any more culinary experimentation today.

Travel, Life & Experience

It's so frustrating when I get a post nearly done, don't "save to drafts", accidently hit the wrong button ... and gonzo, ugh ... my choice of words, and feelings never quite resonate the same when I try to recreate what has just been lost.  My focus this morning was on travel, life, and experiences therein ... guess I'll begin ... again ... as I am ...

“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” ~Jack Kerouac
I consider battered suitcases all my life experiences ... no matter the road taken, no matter if I'm tattered and torn, weathered and worn, my suitcase may be battered, but not beaten and unusable - my character, integrity, humor, and wit are intertwined within the threads of my life's quilt, that's tucked inside!  ~nr lenz

"Two men look out through the same bars; one sees the mud and one sees the stars."
~Frederick Langbridge (1849-1923)

"In youth we learn; in age we understand."  ~Marie Ebner-Eschenbach
I always thought that would, generally, be true. Instead, I find that some people NEVER "get it"!

"Life is the art of drawing without an eraser."  ~John Gardner

If you're lucky, and listening!  ~nr lenz

"A moment’s insight is sometimes worth a lifetime’s experience."  ~Oliver Wendell Holmes
I would call this, Oprah's "Aha" moments ...  ~nr lenz

"Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you."  ~Carl Sandburg
